Summer Tips to Survive the Heat!

summerMost of us welcome hot weather, but when it’s too hot for too long there are health risks. If a heat wave hits this summer, make sure the hot weather doesn’t harm you or any-one you know.

The very young, the elderly and the seriously ill are the groups who are particularly at risk of health problems when the weather is very hot. In particular, very hot weather can make heart and breathing problems worse. Why is a heat wave a problem?

The main risks posed by a heat wave are:

  • Dehydration (not having enough water)
  • Overheating, which can make symptoms worse for people who already have problems with their heart or breathing
  • Heat exhaustion
  • Heatstroke

Dehydration can be mild, moderate or severe, depending on how much of your body weight is lost through fluids. Two early signs of dehydration are thirst and dark colored urine. This is the body’s way of trying to increase water intake and decrease water loss.
Other symptoms may include:

  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Headache
  • Tiredness
  • Dry mouth, lips and eyes
  • Passing small amounts of urine infrequently (less than 3 or 4 times a day)

Dehydration can also lead to a loss of strength and stamina. It’s the main cause of heat exhaustion. You should be able to reverse dehydration at this stage by drinking more fluids, without medical attention.
